👇🏼The top things I learned whilst hiking in Australia (Queensland edition)👇🏼

No trip is mine is complete without climbing a mountain of some kind.

And the experience definitely differs from the hiking I’m used to in Canada and the US…

BUT FIRST

Don’t forget to SAVE this post and SHARE it with anyone you know heading to Australia to travel and hike 🥾

1. It is HOT, and the humidity is crazy high. You know that feeling of a film of sweat coating your entire body? It’s that.

2. Snakes are around and do pose a threat, but they definitely aren’t out to get you. They’re more scared of you than you are of them. Plus! The vibration of you walking scares them off, so take big stomps. 🐍

3. You can’t swim in every water you see, EVEN in clear ocean water, the crocs could be lurking anywhere…and the last thing you want is to be torn apart by a crocodile in a death roll. No THANK YOU.

4. A prehistoric bird called a cassowary exists. It’s a large flightless bird, almost like an emu and a turkey combined, but with a huge horn on its head. Advice is to simply leave them alone, and to not leave food scraps out. Treat them as you’d treat a bear 🐻!

5. The biggest threat of the rainforest is the Lawyers Vine, a nasty plant with spikes all over. It’s adapted as such to climb to the treetops for sunlight, but when it attaches to you, it gets stuck and can rip your skin! I was victim to the lawyers vine on multiple occasions 😢

6. The Daintree rainforest in Far North Queensland is over 130 million years old, the oldest rainforest on the planet!

7. Stranglers figs are a brutal plant, which wraps itself around a host tree, taking over its water and food supplies, until it kills it. Savage.

I wish I could show you guys some of the wildlife here but they were hiding! Maybe for the best…

Has anyone ever seen a cassowary?

Or a crocodile? 🐊
