A towering figure in American politics and public service, Rangel served 23 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as the voice of Upper Manhattan’s 15th Congressional District. In 2007, he made history as the first African American to chair the House Ways and Means Committee—one of the most powerful committees in Congress. Congressman Rangel’s lifelong commitment to civil rights, urban revitalization, and legislative excellence earned him national acclaim. He was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and a relentless advocate for Black communities across the country.⁠

In 2008, Morehouse College inducted Congressman Rangel into the Board of Renaissance Leaders, recognizing his enduring impact on government and civic engagement. His portrait remains in the Hall of Honor in King Chapel as a testament to his legacy. In 2009, he was awarded the College’s prestigious Candle in Government and Civic Engagement.⁠
