Student Athlete Mental Health Awareness:

This moment right here was one of the most emotionally unhealthy moments I ever had on the track. After not medaling at SECs I put myself under extreme pressure to become a 1st Team All-American at NCAA’s.

I wanted it so bad that I decided to take the entire burden onto myself and handle it on my own. This caused me unhealthy amounts of anxiety.

This First Jump was my second attempt make at 2.15m (7’0.5) and the bar barely stayed on. I walked off the mat in fear (out of the frame of the camera) and just stood hunched over in shock with my hands on my knees, breathing heavily with tears forming in my eyes. This was after a MADE attempt. I felt alone.

It was the thought of me not making the podium after a rough indoor season and a historic 2022 Season, that nearly broke me mid competition. I Finished the competition by focusing on this Scripture I read that told me to Focus on God as my audience of 1 to block out the noise.

After finishing 14th I thought I was fine. But then I went to sit in a chair and didn’t move for 3-4 hours. I wavered between feelings of regret and disappointment of not accomplishing my goal. The moral of the story is always lean on your support, and get help when you need it. We shouldn’t do things alone even when we feel like we have to.
