## Caption

An effective aircraft with unusual wings. When test pilot Lyman Bullard took the Vought XF4U-1 Corsair prototype on its first flight 85 years ago today, the aircraft had the largest engine driving the biggest propeller ever flown on a fighter aircraft. It had another striking feature: a wing bent gull-shaped on both sides of the fuselage. This arrangement gave additional ground clearance for the large propeller and reduced drag at the wing-to-fuselage joint.
Pictured here is the Museum's Vought F4U-1D Corsair at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
