utjschool/utexasrtf student Garrett Bohannan is spending his summer capturing life through a new lens—literally. He’s studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland, with donna.decesare.photo as part of her Documentary Photography Storytelling Maymester, where he’s honing his photography skills and immersing himself in a community of storytellers.

As part of a visual reporting course focused on contemporary Ireland, students work in small teams to document identity, culture, and social justice issues through photography. “So far, I have learned more about how to use cameras, how to convey meaning through photography, and how to find stories within a new community of people. We have had a variety of guest speakers from the Irish Times, BBC and Photo Museum Ireland who have all given advice and feedback on how we can take what we are learning now into a future career in journalism.”

Garrett is putting his Moody training to use every day. “Journalism classes at Moody teach a lot about interviewing techniques and how to establish a sense of trust with sources. I feel like this program came at the perfect time and has truly allowed me to feel confident and ready to meet people every day and tell their stories.”

After the program, Garrett is heading to London and Barcelona before returning to Austin for senior year and back to work at Moody in the fall! When he hasn’t been capturing Irish life, Garrett has been streaming Lady Gaga’s “Mayhem” album and is excited for upcoming music from Miley Cyrus and Lorde this summer. He’s also re-reading Intermezzo by Sally Rooney—fittingly set in Dublin. What books are you reading this summer?
