In the Karakoram Mountains, snowy peaks give way to icy glaciers in this image taken by the Landsat 8 satellite in 2017. You can see the glaciers here as long, snaky trails of ice that follow the path of the river. 

Several of the glaciers that flow into these mountain gorges surge, meaning they cycle through periods when they flow forward several times faster than usual. In the spring of 2017, one glacier advanced as quickly as 65 feet (20 meters) a day—slow by human standards, but fast enough to dislodge water that pooled up behind it, leading to potential floods.

The Landsat program is a series of satellite missions jointly managed by NASA and the USGS. Landsat satellites have been observing Earth since 1972, providing an uninterrupted data archive to help make informed decisions about Earth's natural resources and the environment.
