Jordan🇯🇴 is a great destination for people of any age and heading to Petra is a highlight! Here are my tips for your visit to this archaeological wonder:

🇯🇴Book accommodation in the nearby town of Wadi Musa. Petra is 3 hours south of the capital Amman, so it’s highly recommended to base yourself in Wadi Musa as it’s closeby. Also, book a place near the entrance if possible! The first time I visited, I stayed at the Petra Moon Hotel and was able to walk to the entrance within 10 mins. This time I stayed at the Marriott, which required a 15 min car ride.

🇯🇴Start early! We arrived at the entrance at 8:30am and it was already full of tourists 😅. 

🇯🇴If you have the time in your itinerary, I recommend visiting Petra over two days so that you can see everything. Again, the site is massive!

🇯🇴Good walking shoes and sun protection are a must. Things are far apart in Petra— for example The Treasury (the facade seen in the video) is located over a mile from the entrance— and there is relatively little cover from the sun.

🇯🇴 If you have mobility issues (or are traveling with younger children) getting around is challenging. The uneven terrain makes rolling around in a wheelchair or stroller near impossible. However, there are golf carts and horseback rides for hire.

🇯🇴Want to get “the” shot? There are loads of folks on-site who are well-versed in the best photo spots. Just be sure to bring local currency to tip them, and negotiate a fee for their services BEFORE they start snapping away.

🇯🇴 Visit The Monastery! In my opinion it’s the most impressive building in Petra, so while it’s difficult to get to, it’s entirely worth seeing.

🇯🇴Want a different perspective? Consider going to Petra after dark for a beautiful candlelit experience (known as Petra by Night). However, beware— the spectacle only takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
