#SummerXMoody: This summer, utexascld student Valentina Avendaño is getting a global perspective on public relations in her hometown of Lima, Peru, where she’s interning at Pacífico Seguros, one of the country’s largest insurance companies. Valentina has jumped right into the fast-paced world of corporate PR—drafting press releases, collaborating on communication strategies and exploring how public image is shaped from within a major organization.

“My biggest takeaway has been the importance of being proactive. As an intern, you’re not the most senior person, which is why it’s crucial to show interest, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn and collaborate.”

She credits her “Intro to Public Relations” class, taught by Dave Junker, with giving her the confidence to take on real-world writing assignments, and COM302E for teaching her how to navigate corporate spaces with professionalism. “My team trusts me in writing news releases for the company since I know how to write them, the tips and characteristics of them, summarizing abilities, etc. I know how to talk to my bosses, send professional emails, participate in meetings and contribute with helpful participation.”

Reflecting on her experience, Valentina feels that she has gained a stronger understanding of her capabilities. “I have also learned the immense value of being open: open to listening to different perspectives, considering suggestions and embracing change when necessary.”

Outside of work, Valentina is soaking up time in Lima before returning to Austin for the fall semester. Her summer tunes have been Taylor Swift’s “Tortured Poets Department” and Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape.” What has been your song of the summer? 👇👇👇
