Just 14 miles from campus, the Lava River Cave offers a summer hike different from my most. It’s 700,000 years old, nearly a mile long, and a steady 45°F.

Bring a headlamp, sturdy shoes, and your sense of adventure, this Flagstaff favorite is dark, rocky, and captivating. It’s one of the coolest spots beyond the pines.
