😒 "My job is to drive racing cars, not to get involved in politics," said Alan Jones after winning the Spanish Grand Prix, On This Day 45 years ago. A blazing hot race with even higher temperatures off track, it was the first race seriously affected by the FISA-FOCA power struggle for F1 - FISA, the governing body, and FOCA, the independent constructors' association. ⚔️

FOCA drivers boycotted drivers' briefings earlier in the year, unhappy with Jean-Marie Balestre's burgeoning autocracy and perceived bias towards non-FOCA manufacturer teams Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Renault; FISA fined and later ordered licence suspensions for the FOCA drivers, and FOCA teams threatened to withdraw from the GP altogether. 😤

King Juan Carlos insisted the race go ahead, and the organisers promptly pulled it from FISA control - the FOCA-free first practice session was red flagged half an hour in, FISA officials firmly told to leave the circuit, and by Saturday, the FISA-affiliated manufacturer teams followed suit. With venom flying from all sides, the "pirate" Spanish Grand Prix went ahead! 🏴‍☠️
