Boston Marathon Race Recap, Part 4:

The beginning of marathons are sometimes a little too exhilarating. The invincibility one feels at mile 1 is foolhardy.
I call it the “Honey Badger Mile.”
You feel like you can beat anyone, fear nothing and conquer everything.
We went through the first mile in 5:42 and I felt INCREDIBLE.

💭Ohhh this is lovely. I am very content.

Another half mile went by around the same pace.

💭Great, this is going according to plan.

My coach told me to get through 4 miles feeling like I did the least amount of work.
Everyone was still together, which I expected. But then, all of a sudden, somebody started to surge.

💭Oh boy, already?!

Many races I have run there is always someone to test the field. To see where people are at and whether or not to call their bluff. I assumed everyone would let her go and settle in to an appropriate pace together, but that was not the case. The entire field moved with her and before I knew it, I was too.
I looked down at my corosglobal watch as it split at Mile 4:

5:02

💭5:02?! What the hell? Why are we running 2:12 marathon pace right now?

Only joking, I had no idea what 5:02 per mile pace meant at the time.
(Mental math during a marathon? Psh, forget it.)
I just knew it was TOO FAST!
