Proper Breathing Mechanics

The majority of folks have become chronic mouth breathers

This is absolutely awful for athletic & sexual performance, as well as your overall health

It may seem like breathing more rapidly through your mouth would help with physical activity, but it's actually the opposite. Over-breathing through the mouth decreases oxygen availability, thus lowering your output.

Slower nasal breathing allows CO2 levels to rise before the CO2 is exhaled and this is a critical step for driving up oxygen saturation and improving CO2 tolerance.

The cilia in our nostrils (nose hairs) also protect our body from around 20 billion particles of foreign matter each day, acting as a natural air filtration mechanism built into our bodies, allowing your lungs to be more productive & healthier.

In recent years I've become much more conscious of focusing only on nasal breathing, even during high-intensity exercise, and have found remarkable improvements in my performance, recovery, and overall sense of well-being.

This is also due to the increase in nitric oxide production from breathing through the nose. If you want to take this technique to another level, make a humming noise on the exhale which stimulates the vagus nerve, enhancing nitric oxide production even further and boosting various chemicals in the body to enhance overall health.

Certain nasal breathing techniques are my #1 tool for decreasing stress/anxiety and boosting sleep quality, but more on that another time.

Bottom line: minimize mouth breathing. Focus on breathing through your nose during the day, during exercise, and during sleep. It's a foundational step in boosting your overall health and performance in everything you do.

Next week I'll be sharing how I help my patients/students resolve chronic sinus congestion that prevents proper breathing mechanics and the common causes that lead to this issue.
