On #WorldOceanDay, you’d expect us to celebrate our favorite friends of the ocean, but protecting them is more important.

In the last 3 years, my family and I have picked out over 1,500 balloons from the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. We’re just one boat that goes out ~ once a week.

💨Balloons filled with helium ⋮ a finite resource ⋮ travel hundreds to thousands of miles & land as litter on beaches, rivers, lakes, oceans, forests & other natural areas - putting wildlife in danger.

🐋Balloons are ingested by whales, dolphins, turtles, seals, fish & waterfowl who innocently believe they are food, like jellyfish or squid. Balloons and their strings cause entanglements, choking, blockage of intestinal track and … death.

⚡️Unexpected power outage? Cause: 🎈

🚫 balloons are NOT biodegradable

☠️ & just in case you didn’t know, your balloons don’t actually end up in the hands of the dead.

🤷🏻‍♀️ A lot of you say “I’m not going to release my balloon” or “we tie them down” most people don’t let their balloons go on purpose (aside from ridiculous planned releases) accidents happen - and even if you throw them away - they don’t go a w a y!

If you’ve read this, thank you. If you’ve changed the way you celebrate, thank you! If you’re still rolling your eyes and talking shit behind my back (or to my face) about picking balloons out of the ocean - you suck.

There are many other ways to celebrate and mark milestones. Our kids make giant numbers out of old Amazon boxes for the 1st day of school and we’re having a lot of fun with alternative decorations that last, can be reused and aren’t going to kill anyone.
