I’ve just finished a blog post on travel insurance, and thought I’d since there’s a lot of new faces since our crash - and it never really made it onto the grid (it’s in my highlights somewhere) - I’d talk about our experience 

Back in 2019, after living in Bali for almost a year, I was driving us home when we got t-boned by another bike. I remember seeing the headlights, and waking up in hospital looking like the photos above, with Tim forgetting what happened every few minutes. (We had helmets on)

I got away with a concussion, bruised ribs, and banged up ankle. But Tim’s nose, cheekbone, and eye socket were broken and he needed reconstructive surgery to fix them. 

We both had travel insurance. But a few weeks before the crash, Tim swapped to cheaper insurance. He’d had good, more expensive insurance for two years and never needed it - so he swapped to something cheaper. Turns out, it was terrible timing!

My insurance was easy to deal with, easy to claim with, and had good support. His insurance was a nightmare. They and made a stressful time infinitely harder with their lack of support, bad communication, and general IDGAF attitude. 

In the end we paid over £12k for his surgery in a private hospital, which was everything we had at the time. Money well spent, but we were very lucky to have it - many travellers don’t. 

The thing with travel insurance is that it’s too easy to take out, and too easy to feel like you’re covered when you’re not. Tim had insurance but it didn’t help us when we had an accident. 

I know it’s long overdue to post my travel insurance recs, but honestly when I tried before it brought back a lot of feelings. jaynestravels_ got me started with this post, and I’m really glad that I have a place for you all to go when you have questions about getting covered for your trip. What policy to get / mistakes to avoid / red flags to look for
