It’s come to my attention that some of you will be coming to Bali & Thailand during these festival and has no idea! 🚨

These are two of my *favourite* festivals in Southeast Asia, so if you’re attending this year or in upcoming years, I have some tips below 🫶🏻

Nyepi is Bali’s annual day of silence, to celebrate the new Saka year (one of the Balinese calendars). It’s a sacred Hindu festival celebrated primarily on the island, so it’s quite a unique experience. The videos I show in the reel are of the Ogoh Ogoh festival the night before - I have no videos of Nyepi as you don’t really do much 🤭 

You’re expected to remain indoors for 24 hours (from 6am - 6am), not make noise, don’t have lights on, or music playing. If you don’t want to take part, you can go to the Gili’s which are part of Lombok and Muslim islands so they don’t celebrate Nyepi. The airports close during Nyepi, so you have to leave the day before or after. The days surrounding Nyepi are full of celebrations including the Ogoh Ogoh festival, and Melasti. 

Songkran is Thai new year, and like Nyepi the date changes every year. While in Bali they are silent to start the new year, in Thai culture they turn the country into one big water fight! Everywhere you go you’ll have water shot from water guns, a hose, or buckets. With little kids or old ladies laughing and soaking you! 

It’s a great time to be in Thailand. I love to celebrate in Bangkok but it does get really really busy here. Koh lanta was much more chilled, so if you don’t want to go too crazy consider celebrating on an island. 

On islands, you can find local Songkran festivities by asking your accommodation, they’ll know the closest place where people will congregate to splash. In Bangkok, go to Silom or Khaosan to take part. There are festivals on each night, and lots of big hotels do splash pool parties. Pop online and there are lots of sites showing festival listings. The W hotel does a big popular splash party.
