How our 4 hour journey to Penang became a 10 hour journey to Penang! 🫣🫣

I’m glad I vlogged this day because this is a very common kind of travel day when you’re backpacking! You can plan all you like but there are some things you can’t control - like a broken down bus! Ill concede that the airport debacle was entirely my fault though 🫣 adding another hour to our arrival time!

Here’s the places we went to in the video!

• We booked our bus on a website called BusOnlineTravel.com, which is where I always book my tickets in Malaysia. Just be mindful that the time estimates are unrealistically fast, so do check the route on Google maps first to get your timings. KL -> Georgetown is minimum 4 hours. There’s a train you can get if you want your timings to be a bit more reliable
• we stayed at a budget hotel called Kooning, and it was €34.09 for the room. It had a good AC, comfy bed, and the mezzanine meant it was spacious for packing our stuff. Also, you could walk out the door pretty much everywhere you need it so the location was 10 out of 10.
• our first stop for food was TokTok Mee, a bamboo noodle shop in the Michelin guide. Our dinner was under a fiver, you can watch them make the noodles in house and take the staff recommendation on what to order. They have noodles with no egg btw!
• we walked down Chulia street, which is great for nightlife, food, meeting people. We stopped at Reggae bar first, and the Mexican place is on Love Lane, just off Chulia street
• red garden food market is definitely good for food at a reasonable price, and doesn’t always have the live shows so do check it out as you can walk here easily from Chulia
• cocktail place was MM2, en route from red garden back to Chulia
• the street bar / store is cafe antarabangsa. You can buy any drinks there and sit out and chat. It’s a backpacker style spot, cheap, chatty and chilled out. Like the places you’d drink@at in Hanoi!

I’ve got a Penang itinerary with more stops coming up, this was a super short trip but we’ve done great hikes / temples and sunrises here - plus the street art is so cool. Save these spots, and more recs are coming ❤️
