An eSIM is an electronic SIM. It differs from a physical SIM in that it is installed on your phone, not inserted physically into it. eSIMs allow you to connect to a network and use data just like your physical SIM but with no roaming fees and cheaper data costs.

Here are some of the most common questions about eSIMs, and share my tips for using one.

What happens to my home sim when I activate a sim card?
Your home SIM can remain in your phone and be switched on when your SIM is enabled. You can have multiple SIMs and your physical SIM enabled on your phone.

Can I make and receive calls and texts with my esim?
While some eSIMs allow you to make calls, most are primarily used for DATA ONLY.  You don’t get a phone number with many of them. You can use your physical sim to make and receive calls and texts on your regular phone number, while your eSIM is used for data.

Can I use WhatsApp without changing my number?
YES! You can keep your regular number on WhatsApp, while your eSIM provides the data to send and receive messages to this number.

How hard are they to install?
Different providers have different methods. Airalo is the easiest provider, as you can install your SIM directly from the app without fiddling with QR codes and installation instructions. I recommend Airalo for first-time users.

Are they better than physical SIM cards bought locally?
They’re more convenient; you can install them directly from the app and have them ready when you land. You’re immediately connected as soon as you arrive. Local sims can be cheaper, so sometimes you may start with an eSIM so you’re connected right away, then buy a physical SIM a few days into your trip.
