⚠️ Trigger Warning

As we enter the first of the ten nights of Ramadan, the most sacred nights of the year, we are reminded that every act of charity is multiplied many times over. These are the nights when the gates of mercy are wide open, and the rewards for giving are immeasurable. What better time to support women and children escaping abuse—offering them safety, dignity, and a new beginning?

Since opening our doors, we have sheltered and supported over 1,000 women and children, each carrying a story of hardship, survival, and resilience. Z’s story is one of them.

But this isn’t just about Z. It’s about the many women who have endured not only abuse from a partner but also emotional abuse from those who were meant to protect them. For Z, that person was her stepmother. The very woman who should have nurtured her instead became the source of deep emotional pain, reminding us that abuse can come from those we least expect.

Every night after Maghrib this Ramadan, we are sharing the real experiences of survivors who have found refuge at Asiyah Women’s Center—the first Muslim women’s shelter in NYC. Their stories remind us why we must continue this work, why we must stand up for them, and why no survivor should ever feel alone.
