Snoopy has gone where no beagle has gone before.⁣
⁣
The #Artemis I mission was the first integrated flight test of NASA’s deep exploration systems—the Space Launch System rocket, the Orion spacecraft, and the Exploration Ground Systems. Although Orion didn’t have a crew on Artemis I, there were a number of very special passengers aboard, including Snoopy — the mission’s zero-gravity indicator. Cameras inside Orion revealed Snoopy bobbing around, indicating the microgravity environment inside the capsule.⁣
⁣
The world’s most powerful rocket launched Nov. 16, 2022, sending Orion on its record-breaking mission beyond the Moon. For 25.5 days, the NASAArtemis team completed all mission objectives to prepare future astronauts for their lunar mission. Orion returned to Earth on Dec. 11, 2022, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.⁣

Snoopy is an important symbol within NASA culture. Employees who have significantly contributed to the human spaceflight program to ensure flight safety and mission success are awarded the Silver Snoopy award, a sterling silver Snoopy lapel pin that has flown in space. The Apollo 10 lunar module was also affectionately called “Snoopy” by the crew.⁣
