Today, the Seoul Judicial Court officially announced its ruling - a monetary fine - for the 5 Greenpeace activists and their peaceful protest on #PlasticPollution that took place over 6 months ago. We are finally seeing the light at the end of a very long tunnel, and will be ecstatic to see our brave activists head back home hopefully in the coming weeks. ⁣

ICYMI: On 30 November 2024, 4 activists boarded a tanker that was about to load toxic plastic chemicals from South Korea’s Daesan complex during INC-5. ⁣
⁣
Following this protest, the 4 activists and Rainbow Warrior Captain Hettie were placed under a travel ban and a very long-lasting investigation in South Korea despite admitting to being on the tanker. ⁣
⁣
Greenpeace has long used non-violent direct action around the world to raise awareness of the environmental crisis and to push for structural change. Unfortunately, the case of the 5 activists has raised questions around the protection of civic space as well as the fundamental freedom and rights that are supposed to be guaranteed in a democratic society.⁣
⁣
We would like to give a well-deserved round of applause and a tremendous show of appreciation to the activists - Al, Ash, Jens, Sam and Hettie - who remained strong through the past 6+ months and steadfast in their beliefs that their peaceful protest was worth it all. ⁣
⁣
The 5 Greenpeace activists’ stay may be concluding in South Korea, but their fight will continue on. ⁣
