Do you know what is the common point between people in Chile, Thailand, Senegal, Sri Lanka or even Greece? ⁣
⁣
They are all pushing against unsustainable practices and industrial exploitation that are devastating marine biodiversity and impoverishing people, in most cases for the short-term benefit of a few, often corporations and governments with their own interests. From state-imposed industrial megaprojects and destructive fishing in Thailand, to intensive aquaculture in Chilean Patagonia, fishmeal and fish oil factories in West Africa, and bottom trawling in Sri Lanka. ⁣
⁣
Coastal regions are also facing growing climate change impacts, devastating in a particular way coastal people through sea level rise, more intense storms, loss of fishing grounds and tourism opportunities. ⁣
⁣
Different seas, common threats. But there is more to what brings them together.⁣
⁣
Small-scale fishers, coastal communities and Indigenous Peoples have been sustainably managing the ocean, protecting biodiversity and safeguarding a healthy climate for all for centuries. The ocean is a vital climate regulator and key to help mitigate climate change and its impacts, so coastal people who have been sustainably managing the oceans for centuries are not only protecting their livelihoods and culture, but everyone’s future and right to live in a healthy environment. We all depend on the ocean. ⁣
⁣
#UNOC3 is starting tomorrow in Nice and it is a crucial moment to demand global leaders recognize that small-scale fishers, coastal communities and Indigenous rights and leadership are vital to restoring ocean health and ensuring a fair ocean governance.⁣
⁣
Tell governments that marine conservation can only be a success with coastal communities leading the wa(y)ve 🌊⁣
