Coming from the Central Valley city of Bakersfield, CA, Garrett Miller is currently in his second year at San Jose State University, pursuing a major in Computer Engineering.

From a young age, Garrett was drawn to engineering because of its natural fit for unraveling challenges. "Growing up, I always loved solving problems, and engineering, at its core, is all about solving problems,” Garrett reflects. "As engineers, we are given a problem, and it's our job to find a working and reliable solution to benefit ourselves and others."

His passion grew even more when engineering programs were offered during middle and high school, nurturing his love for the field. When the time came to choose a university, SJSU's College of Engineering stood out as it allowed him to connect with the experts in the field more closely.

As it is for  many aspiring college students, financial constraints proved challenging, especially in the Bay Area. "It’s no secret that living in San José isn’t cheap, especially compared to Bakersfield," Garrett admits. Upon receiving the Jane G. Evans scholarship, a beacon of hope that not only covered his tuition but also eased the burden of living expenses in this pricey area. Garrett felt immense relief. "The scholarship helps alleviate some financial stress, and I am extremely grateful to have been selected to receive it."

Before college, Garret wishes that he had been more comfortable at failing. "We all fail, and that failure is part of learning and growing," he muses. Failing can cause doubts and hinder your growth, only if you let it, “I was taking Calculus 2 and I failed my first midterm miserably, but that failure was the wake-up call I needed to build study habits.” Thanks to that wake-up call he passed the class easily at the end.

As Garrett navigates through his academic journey, he remains deeply rooted in his communities, both at SJSU and back home in Bakersfield. He volunteers as an assistant for the SJSU men’s soccer team and he coaches a youth soccer team in Bakersfield, giving back and inspiring the next generation.

Looking ahead, Garrett’s dreams remain fluid but one thing is clear: he is driven by a desire to make a positive impact, particularly in underprivileged communities. "I do know that I would like to find a way to make technology more efficient and more accessible to underprivileged areas," he shares.

To incoming fall freshmen, Garrett advises that they get involved and embrace connection. "Most people here are extremely nice and open to conversation," he affirms, and stay in the present not the future nor the past. "Trying to focus on what I can do here and now has definitely made these past couple of months not only more successful but also more enjoyable."
