A sweeping manhunt is underway in Minnesota after former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband were shot dead in their home in what Governor Tim Walz has called a “politically motivated assassination.”⁣
The suspect, named by officials as Vance Luther Boelter, 57, allegedly posed as a police officer, shooting another lawmaker — State Senator John Hoffman — and his wife before targeting the Hortmans. Police say Boelter fled on foot after exchanging fire with officers. He remains at large.⁣
⁣
Authorities discovered a vehicle resembling a police SUV nearby, containing a target list of nearly 70 individuals, including politicians such as Ilhan Omar, Tina Smith, and Governor Walz. A manifesto and flyers reading “No Kings” were also recovered.⁣
⁣
Boelter, a former state workforce board appointee, had claimed security experience in Gaza and Africa, with ties to evangelical ministries. A housemate told Reuters Boelter texted him hours before the attacks saying he “might be dead soon.”⁣
⁣
The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward and released images of Boelter wearing a rubber mask and faux uniform. Officials are urging the public to remain indoors as the manhunt continues in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area.⁣
