These 4 things are a game-changer for athletes when it comes to building real respect with umpires 👇 The first one shouldn't have to be said but it needs to be said. 1. Respect – Talk to us, not at us. Even when emotions run high, respect sets the tone. I have never changed a call because you got belligerent after you think I got it wrong. Showing respect in spite of disagreeing with a call speaks volumes for you as a player. 📖 “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” — Romans 12:10 2. Gratitude – A simple “thank you, Blue” goes further than you think. It reminds us we’re on the same field, not opposite sides. Now I don't expect this BUT I do remember the players and teams that make it a point to come say thanks. This is one of the simplest and easiest things you can do. 📖 “Give thanks in all circumstances…” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 3. Patience – Missed calls happen. Growth happens when you stay composed, not when you explode. Did I miss the call? Maybe. This one coincides with the respect point. Your ability to have patience after a bad call will no doubt leave an impression on your umpire. Do not seize the opportunity to show off your colorful language or publicly express your displeasure. We know when we messed up. Same as you do when you make an error. The umpire doesnt yell at you when you make an obvious error, so why do you think it is ok for you to do so? 📖 “Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” — James 1:19 4. Leadership – The best players lead by example. When you stay locked in and set the tone, your teammates—and even umpires—notice. Setting the tone shows maturity. When the leader on the field starts disrespecting the ump the rest follow suit. When the leader takes charge and tells his team "it's ok, next play guys." They usually reset and overcome. Blaming the ump is never the answer. 📖 “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example…” — 1 Timothy 4:12 🎯 Start with better character.
