Hail to Old IU and happy birthday... To us!
On this day in 1820, the Indiana legislature adopted an act establishing a state seminary that would eventually become Indiana University.
Take a spin through (abbreviated) IU history with us in this carousel and then let's BEAT PURDUE!

1. An illustration of the original Indiana Seminary building. Construction began in 1822.
2. The original map platting out the location of the Indiana Seminary grounds in 1820.
3. This portrait of IU's first president, Andrew Wylie is from circa 1845. Invited to be IU's first president in 1828, Wylie remains IU’s third longest-serving president and its longest non-Hoosier chief administrator.
4. This is the Dunn house cir. 1870 - it stood where the Garrett Fieldhouse stands today. A note on the photo reads "built in 1824: 1st floor = Living room, dining room and kitchen all in a row: 2nd floor = 1 large bedroom, 1 small... Fire place in every room."
5. The Indiana University baseball team featured in the 1895 Arbutus yearbook.
6. In 1895, Marcellus Neal became the first African American to graduate from Indiana University. He graduated with an A.B. degree in Mathematics.
7. This 1922 campaign flyer for IU's Memorial Fund celebrated the centennial of the first IU building which was built in 1822. It encouraged people to attend a meeting to: "voice our appreciation of the opportunity Indiana University provides."
8. An obligatory shot of IU's beloved 11th president Herman B Wells relaxing in 1945 with a very good boy named Red.
9. Photo from the 1970 running of the Little 500 race.
10. 200 years after our founding we've confronted a global pandemic, a divided country, remote learning, and so much more. But the spirit and commitment of the students, faculty, and staff at Indiana University campuses have remained undaunted. Happy birthday and hail to Old IU!
