Alexis Tighe was certain the emotions would pour out during the bus ride back to White Plains. Those stoic expressions while gathering their belongings, she said, had veiled the disappointment they felt.

Understandably so, of course. Even the most pollyannish person would be upset after a season-ending loss, particularly in a game that was as competitive.

Beneath that sadness, though, is a tremendous sense of pride in what this group did accomplish. As the pain eventually fades, so does that fixation over what could've been, giving way to an appreciation of what was.

White Plains overcame the heartbreaks of the recent past and chucked that "bridesmaid" label like a bouquet, capturing their first Section 1 softball championship last week. That, coach Chris Rowan said, is reason enough for his team to "keep their heads up."

"It means a lot and I'm grateful for what we accomplished," Tighe said. "I wouldn't have wanted to do it with anybody else. This is a special team."

One that enjoyed a special season. But the Tigers' historic run came up just short on June 8, losing to Section 2's Shenendehowa in a Class AAA regional final at the Haverstraw Sports Complex.

"I'm pleased with the effort and really proud of these girls," said Rowan, whose team had lost in three consecutive section finals before breaking through this spring. "They dealt with those sectional losses and came back committed and improved. They deserve so much credit for that."

Emily Anastacio (pictured) doubled and scored on Madison Steptoe's two-out single to get White Plains on the board in the bottom of the seventh.

There was a belief that the team could defy the odds once more. But a line drive to center was caught, putting an end to a sterling campaign.

"It showed that we don't go down without a fight," Tighe said of the seventh-inning charge. "That's something we've done all season, show that we have heart."
