It was a moment the boys had anticipated throughout high school, imagining how joyous the occasion would be, this well-earned celebration of their efforts and accomplishments.

Alas, it wasn't everything they had hoped for. In fact, some of them didn't even show up.

Fox Lane had long ago scheduled its prom for the evening of June 6, and it just so happened the baseball team is having a season for the ages and its biggest game, to this point, would be held about 12 hours later.

"We had to have our priorities in order," senior Logan Mammola said. "The prom is great, but we knew we'd have to get up early for this, and the game was more important at this time."

The baseball team had a self-imposed 8 p.m. curfew for the prom-goers, leaving them only a couple hours to slow dance and pose for photos. Some of the players went to bed around 9 o'clock, ensuring they'd be rested for the morning trip to Long Island.

Because the bigger celebration came the afternoon of Saturday, June 7, when Fox Lane rallied for a 4-3 win over Section 8's Garden City in the Class AA regional final at Hofstra University. With that, the Foxes are headed to the big dance for the first time since 2003.

"There's nothing to really describe it," Will Rudolph said of his team advancing to the state final four. "This has been the goal since we started and to finally accomplish it, it's unbelievable. I'm so ecstatic right now."
