It was as frustrating a loss as one could imagine at this level, given the circumstances. An ace, pitching perhaps for the last time in high school, was nearing the completion of a virtuoso performance with a championship in reach… only to be done in by a wind-assisted double.

Of course, Will Rudolph was upset, as were his Fox Lane teammates who acknowledged they let a golden opportunity slip from their grasp.

But by the time the group began placing their orders at the Bedford Diner and the conversation flowed, they found solace in their reality.

"We've been preparing for this moment for years and we have the team to get it done," said Rudolph, who took the hard-luck loss in the first game of the Section 1 Class AA final. "We were angry, but then we realized that the loss doesn't change anything we've believed about ourselves from the start of the season. And we were still in position to accomplish what we've dreamed of."

It was a dream deferred, but only for a day. Because Fox Lane rebounded to beat Mahopac in the winner-take-all game on June 1, capturing its first baseball section title since 2006.

"I have no words to describe this feeling," coach Matt Hillis said, flashing what seemed like a permanent smile. "We've come close so many times and, 2006 was a long time ago, so for us to get over the hump now, I'm overjoyed."
