#SummerXMoody: utexasslhs graduate student Louise Pinckney just wrapped up Camp Dream Speak Live right here on the Forty Acres with blankstutteringcenter! Louise is completing her externship with The Blank Center to develop her clinical expertise further and learn from the best.

“It’s so incredible to see the impact of focusing on communication, advocacy, resiliency and education (the CARE model!) as opposed to fluency. I’m learning so much!”

Louise wants to be a speech-language pathologist because of the vastness of the field. As an SLP, she has the opportunity to work with people of all ages in so many different settings. “At the heart of this work is the chance to come alongside people and support them in communicating in ways authentic to them - that’s what drew me to the field initially, and it is still my “why.”

She said that historically, people who stutter have not been the focus of research that drives treatment. Louise wants to be part of the work The Blank Center is doing because the experiences of people who stutter are at the center of everything they do.

“My experience at camp was amazing. From dance parties to inspiring everyday leader speeches, I truly feel changed after last week!” Louise’s favorite part of the camp was the “What I Wish People Knew About Stuttering” open mic after their parade.

Louise has been able to utilize all the skills she’s learned from #TEXASMoody in numerous ways. She said grad school had prepared her to build authentic therapeutic relationships with her clients and their families. This summer, she discovered that she loves interacting with younger kids and emphasized the importance of not underestimating them.

You’ll find her at Barton Springs this summer, catching up on “Shrinking” and thebearfx! She’s listening to Maggie Rogers’ “Heard It in a Past Life” album, which is always a summer listen for her. Louise will also be spending time with her family before the busy fall semester kicks off. We love that for you! How are the rest of y’all spending your summer?
