Are you ready to #StepIntoHistory? The team at MCHC and midatlanticsets have been hard at work refurbishing and installing the newest edition of this engaging community outreach partnership!

This #StepIntoHistory frame is located at the Avalon area of Patapsco Valley State Park, and highlights a historical image from our print collection that grounds us in place-based history. Located on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Patapsco River, the Avalon Nail and Iron Works was built on the site of the old iron forge that was torn down in 1854. The origins of the Avalon Iron Works enterprise date from 1822 when the Ellicott family purchased the Dorsey Forge and chartered the Avalon Company. As the operation grew, 15 duplex houses formed the Village of Avalon.

This frame features a E. Sachse & Co. print from the MCHC Hambleton Print Collection that shows the panoramic view of the Patapsco River Valley with the riverside mill and the surrounding town of Ilchester. The frame allows visitors to step into this historical print while overlooking the contemporary landscape view.

This Friday, June 6, join MCHC and our partners from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the howardcounty_historicalsociety to officially unveil the frame. The celebration includes a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a hike to the old Avalon Nail and Iron Works forge site, led by Robert Bailey, historian and Historic Planner for the DNR.
