Turns out one of the largest Indigenous farms ever documented was already described nearly 200 years ago — by Sauk leader Black Hawk.

A new study confirms what oral histories have preserved all along: the Menominee built an expansive, sophisticated farming system in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Using high-resolution LIDAR and archaeological excavation, researchers uncovered over 95 hectares (~235 acres) of raised agricultural beds (just a fraction of the known site). Much more remains unrecorded.

This research challenges scientific assumptions about what “advanced” agriculture looks like and who gets credit for it. It also calls out colonial frameworks that long dismissed Indigenous systems as “primitive.” 🙄🦴
