The ceremony featured various speeches from the class of 2025 student leaders, valedictorian and AISD superintendent. Part of McCallum’s band and the Meistersingers choir also performed during the occasion. 

Howard believes that the idea of not attending high school anymore at McCallum is still sinking in. The whole transition period feels surreal to Howard. 

“I was telling my voice teacher about a friend of mine the other day, and I said ‘He goes to my school,’ but that isn’t even true anymore,” Howard said. “I guess I would say ‘He went to my high school,’ which is crazy.”

For Howard, the most emotional part of the ceremony was the graduates tossing their caps into the air. Howard will miss the people he has been able to get to know and spend time with during high school in addition to missing his class. 

“Standing in line with everyone before the ceremony really made me think [about the people I will miss most],” Howard said. “I’ve spent anywhere between four and 13 years with them, so it’s hard to imagine leaving.”

Howard believes that although the event focuses on past achievements, it helped him to stay in the present moment. The biggest challenge to Howard in starting this new chapter would be the adjustment to new responsibilities and figuring out who you are in college.

“I need to be honest with myself about who I am and think about where I should go from here, all of that so I am prepared for the responsibilities in college,” Howard said. “Even though all that responsibility is daunting, I’m looking forward to taking it on; I’ve already bought books and started teaching myself some things I think I’ll need to hit the ground running in college.”
