Class of 2025 graduate Ella Piston will be attending Bryn Mawr College this fall, majoring in Biochemistry. She wanted to have a more secluded campus, something a larger school wouldn’t be able to provide her with. 

“I wanted a small, close-knit learning environment with teachers who I can really connect with, and get to know,” Piston said. “That way, they can help me for future job internships or research.”

Piston was accepted into both of her dream schools, Bryn Marr and the University of Texas, and faced the difficult decision of which one to attend. 

“Although UT is a great school, I was trying to get out of Texas,” Piston said. ”I lived here my whole life and I wanted to establish a new pathway to find myself a little bit more, and I liked the opportunities of being able to get a master’s in four years, which I have at Brynn Mawr.”

Throughout her time at McCallum, Piston has found various ways to impact her community, as she played such a large role in the fine arts program, and helped tutor students. 

“I think I have tried to take on a lot of leadership roles specifically, both in my fine arts, Ambassador position for choir and the whole Fine arts program, as well as being a big part of maths and tutoring,” Piston said. “I’ve enjoyed tutoring kids who only speak Spanish in math throughout my years here, and I also enjoyed being one of the officers of NHS and seeing the underclassmen grow up in front of my eyes, that was a really enlightening experience, and it was really interesting to see how they changed as well as the school adapts.”

Piston’s lasting remarks were to try to find your own unique path in high school. 

“Take whatever classes you want, find new friends, find other people, don’t be afraid to decide one day that you want to go a whole different direction,” Piston said. “At one point I thought I would never leave Austin because I was scared or I didn’t want to leave family or friends, but I’m glad I matured enough to find my way and find what I want to do in my life.”
