HISTORY IN THE MAKING: The girls flag football team traveled to Burger Stadium last Friday, May 23, to compete in the first-ever AISD flag football tournament. The Knights advanced to the championship game after beating Crockett 16-7 in the quarterfinals and Travis 12-8 in the semifinals. In the final, the Knights were set to take on the Bowie Bulldogs, but fell short, earning the title of second place with a score of 8-0.

Coach Thomas Gamerdinger and his players are unhappy that they weren’t able to win the whole thing, but they refuse to let one loss overshadow how much they accomplished.

“It’s disappointing for sure, but I don’t think that takes away, as a whole, how proud I am of the girls and how much fun I had coaching this team.”

When he first learned of the opportunity to field a team in the district’s girls flag football program, Gammerdinger immediately seized the opportunity to coach. He says this program has opened up doors for new experiences, not just for the players but for himself as well.

“I was super excited when I heard about the program,” Gammerdinger said. “I have two girls myself, and I always wanted a boy to play football with, but now I might have that opportunity to play with my girls, so I think it's a very good thing for all parties involved.”

After going a perfect 3-0 in the qualifying round the week before and winning two playoff games on Friday, the Knights ended their first flag football season with a 5-1 record. Gammerdinger says this first season is a learning experience for everyone involved, and he is excited for the chance to improve next season and in the years to come.

“We’re all kind of learning,” he said. “I’m learning as a coach, and the girls are learning as players, so as long as you gain something from the loss, it can be positive.”

“I’m excited for next year, I’m excited to see where the season takes us, but mostly I am just proud of the girls for trying and learning something new.”
