Christian Baumgartner leads Steel City in scoring this season with five goals — not bad for a player that’s been progressively moved towards the back since his U12 days.

At Division 1 Depaul ( depaulmsoc ), he’s known for his fitness and defensive work rate. But this summer, he’s playing high and letting instincts from his younger years take over.

“Back in U12 with Chicago Fire Juniors, I was a striker. That’s when the ‘Train’ nickname came — I used to steamroll through players,” Christian said. “It’s been a while since I’ve been on a goal-scoring bender like this, and it honestly just feels good to feel like a kid again.”

That joy shows every time he puts one in the back of the net — and celebrates in the Choo Choo line at Slammers.

“I can’t even think of a better spot to play,” he said. “There’s an aura — you just know it’s going to be a good day. The crowd at Slammers Stadium actually cares. Playing there lets us relish the moment and enjoy the game.”

His mindset is mature, even if his goal celebrations are pure fun.

“If you want to play important minutes, you’ve got to be a two-way player,” he added. “Throughout my college career I’ve always had the fitness and desire to get up field. Steel City has let me pursue that.”

And it’s working. The Train’s rolling — and we’re all aboard.
