Emily here from nurturebynaps! I had no clue where to start when it came to picking the right cup for my baby—and don’t even get me started on straws, various lids and vessels that they come in to choose from. 😅⁠

Here’s what I wish I knew sooner:⁠
✨ Sippy cups are great for getting started, but the goal is to move toward open cups or straw cups to help build those tiny facial muscles (aka the ones they’ll use for talking later!).⁠
✨ Using straws or sipping from an open cup helps babies use their tongue, lips, and jaw in a whole new way. It’s messy, yes, but also developmentally important.⁠
✨ My favorite straw cup ever is the Squeeze & Sip from The First Years. It’s magic—seriously. You just give it a little squeeze to get the water moving and help your baby figure out how to sip. It’s soft, spill-resistant, dishwasher-safe, and the perfect size for little hands. Once they get the hang of it, it becomes their go-to cup on the go.⁠
✨ Pro tip: If you’re using a regular straw, try the finger-on-top drip trick to introduce it—cover the top of the straw with your finger to hold water in, then let a little drip into your baby’s mouth to teach them to suck.⁠

Start practicing around 6 months and build on straw cups between 9-12 months, but don’t sweat it if it takes a little longer. You can try all sorts of cups and keep it around at meals and local on the floor when they’re playing so they can get curious and explore and use it! Every baby gets it in their own time so embrace the exploration phase. 💛 ⁠
