Wishing all you cool cats out there a happy #WorldJaguarDay!

Many folks are surprised to learn that the U.S. Southwest is jaguar country. Though they were killed off to near extinction north of the U.S.-Mexico border, a few have been spotted 😉 in Arizona in recent years. 

Today, one to two wild jaguars are known to reside along Arizona's wild, rugged borderlands. We're working to reintroduce them to their historic habitat and recover their population here. 

Scientists have identified a wide swath of habitat in Arizona and New Mexico — 20 million acres, or about 32,000 square miles — that could eventually support more than 100 jaguars.

This animation, made by our visuals specialist Dipika Kadaba, helps show the history of jaguars in the region, where they're currently protected, and where science shows they can be — and should be — restored.
