🏆 MEET THE 2025 U SPORTS ATHLETES OF THE YEAR NOMINEES AND WINNERS

🏀 Nate Petrone, Calgary

What does it mean to you to represent Calgary and Canada West?

I love it. I’m Calgary born and raised, so it’s been amazing just getting support from everyone in the city, people that I grew up playing basketball against and other coaches. And then Canada West, I love representing them. It was even cool at nationals this year for basketball, just seeing us and Victoria in the final. You know, we are competition, but it is cool to see our conference come out on top.

What was it like for you to experience successes of this year with your team?

That last month was honestly the most fun I’ve had playing basketball. What ended up happening was we really dialed in on our culture and everyone was so good at supporting each other. The environment was just awesome and it really taught me just how important culture really is. So it was super cool to see great culture be rewarded.

What’s something that you’re proud of for yourself that you’ve accomplished?

Honestly, just overcoming adversity and doubt from others. I only had one school interested in me out of high school, and just to be National Player of the Year, Canada West Athlete of the Year, I proved myself right, and I proved some other people wrong. And I’m just glad that I was able to not be swayed by the opinions of other people and what they were telling me. I just feel like I surpassed a lot of expectations, including myself, so I’m super proud of that.
