By next week, our 5 activists - Al, Ash, Jens, Sam and Hettie - will finally be back home after a long, involuntary residence in South Korea for nearly 7 months. ⁣
⁣
ICYMI: On 30 November 2024, 4 activists boarded a tanker that was about to load toxic plastic chemicals from South Korea’s Daesan complex. ⁣
⁣
As a part of the Rainbow Warrior’s ship tour on plastic free future in East Asia, they were sending a strong message to cut plastic pollution to the world leaders gathered at the nearby city of Busan for the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to negotiate a UN Global Plastics Treaty.⁣
⁣
Following this protest, the 4 activists and Rainbow Warrior Captain Hettie were placed under a travel ban and a prolonged investigation in South Korea despite admitting to being on the tanker. ⁣
⁣
Greenpeace has long used non-violent direct action around the world to raise awareness of the environmental crisis and to push for structural change. ⁣
⁣
Unfortunately, the case of the 5 activists has raised questions around the protection of civic space as well as the fundamental freedom and rights that are supposed to be guaranteed in a democratic society.⁣
⁣
We would like to give a well-deserved round of applause and a tremendous show of appreciation to the 5 activists who remained strong through the past 7 months and steadfast in their beliefs that their peaceful protest was worth it all. ⁣
⁣
The 5 Greenpeace activists’ stay is concluding in South Korea, but their fight will continue on. ⁣
