After we left Reykjavík, we sailed on the Saturn to Ísafjörður & I did multiple tours from port. The 1st started with a boat ride to picturesque Vigur Island to meet with the wonderful family who take care of it, harvest eider down ethically from the Eider Duck, and run the Vigur Island Foundation for Conservation and Research. I had signed up for the tour because it’s supposed to be one of the best places in Iceland to see puffins. Well, I was a week late. Chock that up to yet another time failing to see them. I think the count is Puffins 5 Kirsten 0. I have the worst luck and have spent so much $ trying to see them only to be thwarted every time. They’re my favorite birds that I would love to see IRL! So I decided to wander the island after listening to our guide. While very small, Vigur Island had a lot of details to entertain a photographer like me that has a fascination with details and textures. There’s also a lovely café. I sat down on the rocky beach and watched the arctic terns mating and feeding one another. And I marveled at the colors on the cliffs around the island, how they changed from emerald to amethyst to gray-blue as the light varied and the sun played peek-a-boo in the mists. Mainly, I just enjoyed the peacefulness of sitting on a rocky beach in Iceland.

📷 What’s your favorite detail?

Don’t miss @islandvigur if it’s puffins you want to view. They’re in the midst of [or finished with] a project that will make it safer to see puffins without humans disturbing their nests or their nesting habits that is in partnership with National Geographic! BUT make sure you visit May - July. Otherwise you’ll be out of luck just as I was in early August.

I look forward to bringing you more stories from another [hosted but not paid] adventure with @vikingcruises. It’s the “Iceland’s Majestic Landscapes” itinerary which includes stops in Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Norway. #MyVikingStory
