On June 18, 1983, when Sally Ride went to space aboard Space Shuttle Challenger, she became the first American woman in space. Ride’s historic launch broke the gender barrier in U.S. human spaceflight and continues to inspire many women to become astronauts. She was known for her friendly and relaxed personality, but also her intense focus.
