As we approach #WorldGiraffeDay, did you know the spot pattern of every giraffe is unique, like a fingerprint? This helps Wildlife Care guardians identify animals at the Zoo, but is also a tool used by researchers and conservationists in the wild 🌿

In particular, “Spot-recognition” software allows scientists to count and track giraffes non-invasively.

Interestingly, the Masai giraffe has irregular, vine-like patches that resemble oak or maple leaves. These spots are notably more complex and less defined than those on other giraffe subspecies. Their spot patterns are also generally darker brown compared to other giraffes, often bordered by light tan lines 🦒

Learn more from your Guardians of Giraffes, Zoo Volunteers, and the thewomanwholovesgiraffes Foundation on June 21 as they guide you through activities, crafts, and touch tables! The connection between indigeneity and the lands that support giraffes will also be explored so that you can learn how to support your local greenspaces and be a Guardian of Giraffes too.

You’ll come to discover, also, how the Masai giraffe species has an endangered IUCN status, with wild populations under threat due to poaching and habitat loss. Their distinct coat pattern helps researchers and the IUCN in monitoring individuals via photographic surveys and AI-based recognition systems.

Finish off your time on June 21st with a special Meet the Guardians talk at 2:00pm at the giraffe habitat in your African Savanna 🦒 #GuardiansOfGiraffes
