Last but most certainly not least our final prof is Jason!
•
Name and Title: Jason Schlude, Associate Professor of Classics, Chair, Department of Languages and Cultures
•
Classes specialized in: Classicists tend to do a lot! I teach all levels of Greek and Latin language and literature (beginning through advanced), and as an ancient historian and archaeologist, I teach (and plan to teach!) a variety of courses on topics like: Introduction to Archaeology, Sword and Scroll: Violence and Cultural Exchange in Antiquity, Parties and Wars: Greece in the Classical Period, and Roman Empire. (These are all courses that are taught in English and involve no pre-requisites.) In these courses, I get to explore the full extent of my interests, which include the last 2.5 million years of human history (!) and especially ancient Greece, Rome, and the Near East. My main area of scholarship is the relationship between Rome and the Near East from 200 BCE on, and I love to write about how the field of Classics can help us to better understand the modern world and its problems and possibilities.
•
How long have you’ve been at CSBSJU: I'm finishing my eighth year! I arrived in Fall 2014.
•
Favorite hobby outside of work: I love doing anything fun outdoors with my kids. I love to play pond hockey, cross-country ski, hike, camp, canoe, fly-fish. I also love to play racquet sports, take black-and-white photography, and write poetry. And oh, I probably cook more than any of these activities combined. I love to create in the kitchen, making homemade pasta, among other things.
•
Favorite person from classical antiquity: As with anything else in Classics, I love too many things to just pick one. I love the Herodotus, an ancient Greek who was one of the best storytellers of all time and (really) the inventor of history and ethnography. He is someone you would definitely invite to a party! I love Tacitus, the most formidable Roman historian of all time, someone who highlighted hypocrisy wherever it existed and relished pointing it out, making you slyly smile every time. And I love Cleopatra VI, the famed Ptolemaic Queen of Egypt who knew over ten languages.
