... And France ranks among the countries where sleep duration has decreased the most since the lockdown. ⤵️

As the summer solstice marks the shortest night of the year, a new study by the Withings Health Observatory reveals an alarming trend: French people are sleeping less and less. In just five years, their average sleep duration has dropped by 41 minutes per night, the equivalent of over 250 hours of lost sleep per year – or an entire month of sleepless nights.

⚠️ This decrease in sleep duration is significantly more pronounced than in other European countries or the United States.
While the scale of this change may be surprising, its consequences are profound. Sleep is not just a time for rest – it plays a crucial role in maintaining both physical and mental health. The study highlights a clear link between reduced sleep time and several health markers:

✔️ People with obesity sleep 21 minutes less on average than those with a normal BMI.
✔️ Those with good arterial flexibility – an indicator of cardiovascular health and longevity – sleep 27.6 minutes more than individuals at high risk.
✔️ The lowest point in sleep duration appears around age 32, a life stage often marked by professional and family transitions.

“The impact of sleep on overall health is now well established in the scientific community. Sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnea, as well as insufficient, irregular, or poor-quality sleep, have negative effects on weight, the development of cardio-metabolic diseases, mental health, and even the onset of certain cancers.” – Prof. Pierre Escourrou, cardiologist and sleep specialist

This study was conducted using anonymized data automatically collected by Withings connected devices (smart scales, sleep analyzers, connected watches) between January 2020 and March 2025. The sample included 1,297,124 individuals, of whom 328,387 lived in France, 550,381 in the US, and 418,356 in Germany. The aim of this study is to explore correlations within the available data, without aiming to establish causality.
