Oaks Park wants to let its light shine with a new thrill ride offering a sweeping view at the top of the Willamette River on one side and the city center’s only wildlife refuge on the other.

The height, though, isn’t necessarily the issue. Eight LED spotlights at the base of the tower are.

Wildlife and nature advocates believe the lights could confuse migrating birds and disturb other animals at the nearby Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge — which is as beloved to birders and naturalists as the 120-year-old Oaks Park is to kids and parents on summer days.
