Earlier this morning (Monday, June 23rd) Amherst College announced Eddie Effinger as the new head coach for the Mammoths men’s ice hockey team. Effinger is the ninth head coach in the program’s 117-year history, succeeding Jack Arena who held the position the last 41 seasons.

Effinger, a graduate of Amherst in 2012, played four years for the Mammoths skating in 97 games while accumulating 38 goals & 39 assists for 77 points. He was captain his last two seasons. The program captured two #NESCAC titles in 2009 & 2012 whilst posting the highest winning percentage over a four-year period (.738) with a 74-23-10 record. The Mammoths also qualified for the #NCAA National Tournament twice as he captained the 2012 team to a Frozen Four appearance.

After playing one season of pro hockey in 2012-2013 between the Quad City Mallards (CoHL) and Pensacola Ice Flyers (SPHL), Effinger returned home to began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant coach from 2013-2019. The Mammoths qualified for the NESCAC playoffs in all six seasons, winning the playoff title in 2015 as they’d also make it to the Frozen Four that season.

For one season in 2019-2020, the native of Belleville, IL, would move up to the Division I ranks serving as Director of Hockey Operations for Boston University. From there, Effinger would get his first head coaching gig taking over the St. Olaf College bench for the 2020-2021 season. However, his first season would only see two games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his four full seasons, he’d take the Oles to the #MIAC playoffs each year as they’d take home the title in 2022 & 2024. With those auto-bids, St. Olaf would make two of the three program appearances at the NCAA National Tournament in history. He’d also help the program see its first-ever MIAC Defensive Player of the Year award winner as well as many other accolades.

As the Mammoths website says, “turns out, you can go home again”.
