The rain is back now, but that doesn't mean you have to put away your summery reads - after all, when it gets that hot, the only thing for it is to lie very still on a cold tile floor, and do nothing more strenuous than turn the pages of a book. A big chunky book, like, perhaps, Summer Fun, by Jeanne Thornton.

A must-read piece of queer literature, Summer Fun is told in alternating chapters: on half is about Gala, a trans woman living in the desert, working in a hostel, nurturing a healthy fixation on The Get Happies, a surf rock band from the 60s. The other half consists of the letters she writes but will never send to the band's lead singer, [name omitted], telling herself the story of what lead to the band's dissolution, and why the eponymous album - Summer Fun - never released.

A truly moving, tender story, navigated with the deftness of a storyteller who recognises the necessity of building our own narratives, and the consuming nature of fandom. Torrey Peters said it best when she called it - "The Pet Sounds of trans literature - a masterpiece,"
