Me: Lifts head, checks neck, feels tightness, checks left shoulder, follows tightness, checks left forearm, sees divot…..”whoa, what happened here??”

Patient: “When I was 12 I came off my horse and landed on my arm, it broke in multiple places and came through the skin”.

Me “Gross”.

Patient: “That’s not the half of it, because I had eaten an apple before my ride, they couldn’t sedate me and perform surgery for six hours, and in that time, in the hospital, it got infected.  It was two weeks, in the hospital,  before they could do the surgery.  The nurses spoke with me about the possibility of amputation and life with a prosthetic.  So when I came out of surgery unable to flex my elbow past 90 degrees, which meant I could do my ponytail, but I couldn’t touch my face or feed myself left-handed, I was just happy to be able to ride again (yes she returned to riding while still casted)”…

Me: (I’d been working on her armpit and her forearm flexors as she related the history) “So you haven’t touched your face with your left hand in 46 years?”

Patient: “Nope” (touches face) “Oh my God look!”

Post-surgery, 46 years later, adhesions along the nerve and within elbow removed with ART and elbow flexes to 135 degrees on first treatment.  More to come no doubt.
