We’re shining the spotlight on VeeamVanguard & #VeeamLegend Michael Paul! 💡 As Principal Consultant at Computacenter, Michael helps implement Veeam for customers & shares his expertise on his blog over at https://micoolpaul.com/. Get to know him below. ⬇️

🕹️ How did you get started in tech? 🧑‍💻

From a young age I loved playing video games, and then when my father showed me how to build a computer, I started trying to make video games on that computer.

I continued to learn more about software & hardware both through my own self-help and through college/university and then managed to combine these skills into my first #SysAdmin job.

From there I’ve loved the cycle of finding out how stuff works by breaking it and trying to fix it again and it’s kept me going to this day—It’s probably why I eventually gravitated towards #DataProtection, giving me a safe way out if I break anything too badly!

🎯 When all else fails, what troubleshooting trick always saves the day? 🦸‍♂️

If something isn’t communicating as expected and I’ve ruled the basics out, I like to jump straight to a packet capture on both endpoints and somewhere in the middle of the packet’s expected journey.

It always gives a good sense of what is being sent, what has been received, and cuts down a lot of time finding where dropped traffic has got to as we can typically rule out half of the network in one go! And also, reading the logs never hurts!

✅ What’s a lesser-known Veeam feature that you think more people should know about? ☝️

SureBackup without a doubt. It might be cheating as I think quite a few people know about the feature, but don’t know how to use it or make the most out of it.
It’s more than ‘just’ testing backups, which IMO is hugely important by itself! I frequently position SureBackup as a useful tool for change control.

The ability to take an actual copy of your environment and test changes in isolation is a huge benefit to businesses trying to avoid downtime, it’s far superior to a test environment that is supposed to match your live environment (but never really does!).
