🤫 THE SECRET to coaching five and six year olds!?⁠

Don’t overcomplicate things.⁠
⁠
As you can see from the video, children as young as five have short attention spans. They can’t take in loads of information or follow complicated instructions.⁠
⁠
When working with this age group, it’s all about being clear, quick and keeping things simple. I would recommend that you try to explain the session in under 45 seconds, as any longer and you’ll start to lose them.⁠
⁠
If one or two children aren’t listening… no problem! Don’t stop. Keep going with your explanation because chances are they’re actually listening, even if it doesn’t look like it. And if they’re not, just have a quick 1 to 1 chat with them once the activity starts.⁠

Tag games are a brilliant way to keep it simple, as lots of them would have played similar games at school! ⁠
⁠
This session started as a basic tag game, and I then progressed it into a dribbling activity. The children were dribbling around the area, and if they stopped the ball and put their foot on top, they were ‘home’ and couldn’t be caught.⁠

Really simple idea, but it worked on so much:⁠
- Agility⁠
- Balance⁠
- Coordination⁠
- Close control⁠
- Stopping and starting with the ball⁠
- Spatial awareness ⁠
⁠
All the key fundamentals for kids this age.⁠
⁠
And the best bit? They were developing those skills without even realising it. In their heads, they were just running around having loads of fun!⁠
